Our Little Corner of Brooklyn
Considering recent events, we all need a little distraction. Plus I haven’t written anything in awhile, so I wanted to share a neighborhood appreciation post.
I was out and about last Friday after service when I thought: what a cool little pocket of South Brooklyn. We’re really spoiled over here! Here are some things I love about our hood:
Long Island Bar–where do I start? The drinks, the vibe, the burger, the cheese curds, the fact its on my way home, or you’re very likely to run into some friends there. It's likely a martini, sometimes a beer, and even sometimes there’s an unmarked bottle smuggled back from Oaxaca. The team there are seasoned pros and it always hits; especially after a long shift.
Henry Public –Sometimes I sneak over here for a Turkey Leg sandwich; but it's also a good spot if you’re looking for something a little more low-key than LI Bar. Its dimly lit with little nooks perfect for a date.
Montero–being on a restaurant schedule, I get to go to Montero when its empty and thats when I like it best. Sit at the bar, order a budweiser and see where the night takes ya. Most likely its to the corner deli for a surprisingly good chop cheese.
Brooklyn Inn –the off hours are always best here; so check it out at 3pm when they open or late night on a Sunday. One of those bars you just feel home at.
Sunny’s –perhaps more of a citi bike or uber from Popina; but absolutely love this bar. Sunday afternoons or late nights that spill onto the street are my favorite.
Gus’s–now that I don’t own the place, I can recommend it. The food always fantastic and they amped up their bar game, so a great place to sit at the bar for a cocktail and/or meal.
Swoony’s –another bar that I love to hang out post shift. Although its opposite direction of home for me–its always worth the detour. Sal and the team are doing great things for the Columbia Waterfront District.
Lucali – such a special spot. Grab some bottles from the Popina cellar and its on.
F&F– I often make excuses to go to the hardware store so I can go grab a slice.
Red Hook Tavern–perhaps a bit of a walk; but that burger is worth it. Although crushing chablis and oysters on the patio in the summer is a vibe–the tavern hits its stride in those colder weather months. Start with a cocktail and end with a Guinness–with a few bottles of vino in between.
Defontes –if we’re crossing into Red Hook then I can’t not mention my favorite sandwich shop in brooklyn. My order: the italian stallion; but its all really good and sandwiches are huge!
